J-Link-OB is a set of independent simulation debugging downloaders developed by SEGGER. It is usually designed on the evaluation boards (“on-board”) of major companies, which is why the suffix is “OB”. This set of simulation download debugger named “J-Link-OB” has USB communication function and can communicate with PC. The other end communicates with supported devices through SWD/JTAG to complete the debugging simulation download debugging task. Compared with the original J-Link OB, our J-Link OB simulation debugger lacks the JTAG interface and only retains the SWD interface to debug and download MCUs from many companies using ARM cores.
Key Features:
- Integrated Debugging & Programming: Combines real-time simulation debugging (JTAG/SWD) with flash memory programming in a single compact unit.
- USB Type-C Interface: Uses the modern, reversible Type-C connector for robust, high-speed connectivity and power delivery, eliminating the hassle of older USB standards.
- Virtual COM Port (VCP): Features an integrated UART bridge, therefore allowing for simultaneous debugging and serial data communication with the target chip via a single USB cable.
- Wide Target Voltage Range: Supports target voltages from 3.3 V down to 1.8 V, ensuring compatibility with both standard and low-power microcontrollers.
- Driverless Operation: Operates seamlessly with popular IDEs like Keil uVision, IAR Embedded Workbench, and STM32CubeIDE, often requiring no custom driver installation.
Technical Specifications:
- Debugger Protocol: Supports JTAG and Serial Wire Debug (SWD)
- Target Core Support: ARM Cortex-M Series (M0, M3, M4, M7), and others.
- Host Interface: USB 2.0 Full Speed (via Type-C port)
- Target Voltage Range (VTARG): 1.8 V to 3.3 V
- Power Output: Can typically supply a limited amount of power to the target board (e.g., up to 500 mA, check specific board implementation).
- Maximum SWD Clock Frequency: Up to 10 MHz (Dependent on implementation)
Mechanical Specifications:
- Form Factor: Compact OB (On-Board) style module, often used as an integrated header or small standalone PCB.
- Host Connector: USB Type-C Receptacle
- Target Connector: Typically a 4-pin (SWD) or 20-pin (JTAG) 2.54 mm pitch header or flat flexible cable (FFC) connector.
- Housing: Often supplied as an open PCB module or encased in plastic/metal shielding.
Dimensions:
- Length: ≈ 45 mm (Varies by manufacturer)
- Width: ≈ 15 mm (Varies by manufacturer)
- Height: ≈ 5 mm
- Weight: Extremely lightweight, < 10 g
Pinout and Wiring:
- SWDIO: Serial Wire Data Input/Output (Data line for programming and debugging).
- SWCLK: Serial Wire Clock (Clock line for synchronous data transfer).
- VCC (or VTARG): Target Voltage Reference Input (Used by the debugger to sense target voltage and configure logic levels).
- GND: Ground reference connection.
- VCP_TX/VCP_RX: Virtual COM Port Transmit/Receive pins for serial communication with the target.
- JTAG/SWD Note: Always connect the debugger ground (GND) to the target board ground for reliable communication.

Commonly Used in:
- Embedded Systems Prototyping: The primary tool for developing firmware on custom PCB designs and development boards.
- University & Educational Labs: Provides students with accessible and industry-standard debugging capabilities for ARM microcontrollers.
- Consumer Electronics R&D: Used for in-circuit debugging and production testing of devices featuring Cortex-M series processors.
Applications:
- Firmware Development & Debugging: All ARM79\11, Cortex-M0\M1\M2\M3\M4\A5\A8\A9 series embedded microcontrollers with SWD interface.
- Chip Programming: Flashing new firmware images onto the target microcontroller’s internal Flash memory.
- Bootloader Development: Used to install or recover bootloaders and low-level system software.
- Production Testing: Moreover, manufacturers integrate this style of debugger into test fixtures for high-volume programming and verification.
Equivalent Models:
- ST-LINK/V2: The official, functionally similar debugger/programmer from STMicroelectronics, which the OB debugger often replicates.
- J-Link EDU Mini: Another popular debugger offering similar SWD/JTAG functionality, however, it generally commands a higher price point.
- CMSIS-DAP Debugger: An open-standard protocol used by various vendors, offering comparable debugging capabilities.
Package Includes:
