It simply plugs into the controller board like a typical A4988 or similar driver would, and then connects to the external stepper driver via a simple 4-wire interface. This is particularly beneficial for 3D Printers that utilize 57/86 stepper motors, as these motors typically require high driving currents, and running high-current drivers directly through a controller board can certainly lead to costly and unexpected damage.
