The WeMos D1 Mini family of boards is one of the latest additions to the ESP8266-based IoT ecosystem. The WeMos D1 Mini Real-Time Clock Shield allows you to add a Real-Time Clock (RTC) to your WeMos mini or mini Pro development boards. Using an RTC is the best way to keep track of time in your projects, for instance, when time-stamping data is captured by a sensor (data logging).

The WeMos D1 Mini RTC Shield is designed so that pins D2 (SDA) and D1 (SCL) are connected to the DS1307 real-time clock chip’s I2C pins onboard. The I2C interface of the shield has a fixed address of 0x68. The DS1307 RTC is a low-cost, low-power real-time clock IC that can maintain a full clock and calendar, i.e., hours, minutes, seconds as well as the year, month, and day.
